'Les Miserables' Trailer: Five Key Scenes
Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman look rough and ragged in first clip from Tom Hooper's musical adaptation.

For his adaptation of the mega-musical "Les Misérables," Tom Hooper has taken a much different approach to bringing a stage work to the big screen. The Academy Award-winning director behind "The King's Speech" allowed his actors to look poor, tired and dirty. Plus, they all recorder their vocals live on set.
The first trailer for "Les Misérables" debuted online Wednesday (May 30), giving us a fuller look at what to expect. Naturally, Anne Hathaway has been the big talking point coming out of the clip. And while the actress sports a rougher look in Hooper's flick, fans will get to see her as Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman) when exclusive footage from "The Dark Knight Rises" debuts at the MTV Movie Awards this Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.
For now, read on as we break down five key scenes from the musical:
Hugh Jackman's Transformation
The first image we ever saw from Hooper's adaptation of the hit musical showed Jackson, looking much rougher than we're used to seeing him. The photo — and much of the footage from this first trailer — comes from the first part of the film, where Jackman's character, Jean Valjean has just been released from prison after 14 years. The look is much different from the cleaned-up Jackman we'll see later in the film, but the rough design proves that Hooper is going further than a little dirt on the cheeks to bring a real-life feel to pre-revolution France.
"I Dreamed a Dream"
Hathaway's stripped-down version of "I Dreamed a Dream" is both surprising and effective. Most performers belt the sorrowful tune, but for Hooper's take, the actors recorded their vocals live on set, so Hathaway's quieter, sadder version makes sense logistically. The toned-down version proves much more cinematic, simpler and more tragic in a way. Bloggers at this year's CinemaCon threw it immediately into the running for an Academy Award after only seeing a short clip. If the trailer is any evidence, they may not have been far off.
The Barricade
One of the most iconic images from the musical, the barricade, makes a prominent appearance in the trailer. It's one of the many images the trailer cuts to as Hathaway sings "I Dream a Dream." Additionally, the clip provides glimpses of Amanda Seyfried as Cosette, Eddie Redmayne as Marius and Samantha Barks as Eponine.
will also stir conversation. After losing her job, Hathaway's character, Fantine, sells her hair in order to provide for her daughter. Hathaway really cut her hair for the part.
Crowe as Javert
The other major character in this miserable affair is Russell Crowe as dogged policeman Javert. He spends years searching for Jean Valjean, hoping to throw him back in prison for breaking his parole. In this scene, Javert looks off a bridge off into the distance, perhaps depicting or referencing his own destiny.

Usher Hopes 'Scream' Is 'Life Changing'
'I always think about that song that will be able to let you out of that slump,' Looking 4 Myself singer says on 'MTV First.'
By John Mitchell
<P>It's not often that fans get to hit the club to party <i>with</i> the artist behind the latest dance hit, but that's exactly what happened for the audience at the interactive <a href="/news/articles/1685172/usher-fuerza-bruta-rehearsal.jhtml">off-Broadway show "Fuerza Bruta"</a> when <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a> arrived for a unique first-listen experience for his new album, <i>Looking 4 Myself</i>.</P><P>As the R&B megastar's latest hit, the beat-driven Max Martin-produced <a href="/news/articles/1684071/usher-next-single-scream.jhtml">"Scream,"</a> pounded through the theater, Usher flew into the audience for a rave-like dance party that had everyone in the place moving.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Usher Previews A Clip Of His 'Scream' Performance Video" id="vid:767987.id:1685137" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>He's used to that sort of reaction by now, having released some of the biggest club hits of the past 15 years, including "OMG," "Yeah," "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love" and "My Way." Usher consistently makes dance records that define a night, and it's important to the singer that his upbeat songs reach people on as deep a level as his more personal ballads.</P><P>"If I'm gonna move you, I want to move you. I hope that it could be something that could be life changing," the soulful signer said during <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/news/767984/usher-takes-over-fuerza-bruta.jhtml#id=1685137">"MTV First: Usher."</a> "You may be going through something real crazy, who knows, and just need to get out and just enjoy yourself. The track can work on many levels, according to the singer: "If you're just ready to have a good time, or if you're working out and you just need that little motivation to push you over the edge, there you go."</P><P><center><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></center></p>

Lindsay Lohan Delivers Big Ratings For 'Saturday Night Live'
While Lohan's hosting skills may be up for debate, her 'SNL' episode delivers second-highest ratings of the season.
By James Montgomery
<P>Her so-called "comeback" may have earned, uh, mixed reviews, but when it came to ratings, <a href="/news/articles/1680377/lindsay-lohan-hosts-saturday-night-live.jhtml">Lindsay Lohan's "Saturday Night Live"</a> stint certainly delivered.</P><P>According to <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2012/03/saturday-night-live-with-lindsay-lohan-delivers-strong-ratings/" target="_blank">Deadline Hollywood</a>, overnight numbers show that Lohan's "SNL" was the second-highest-rated episode of the season, trailing only the January 7 Charles Barkley-hosted telecast, which aired on the same night as NBC's coverage of the Lions/Saints NFL Wild Card playoff game.</P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:746082/cp~vid%3D746082%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A746082" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></P><P>The episode drew a 5.5 rating and a 14 share — meaning that 5.5 percent of all Nielsen households watched, and 14 percent of <i>all</i> households tuned in — up 12 percent from the most recent live "SNL" show, which aired on February 18. Lohan also delivered strongly in the coveted 18-49 demographic (a 3.3 rating and 15 share), up 14 percent from the last live show.</P><P>That's good news for "SNL" producers, who had to weather some <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/lindsay-lohan-saturday-night-live-reviews-296764" target="_blank">fairly scathing reviews</a> following Lohan's performance, in which she frequently read from cue cards and starred in several poorly received sketches (though the Jon Hamm cameo was pretty great).</P><P>In a "Today" show appearance before her hosting gig, <a href="/news/articles/1680215/lindsay-lohan-snl-today.jhtml">Lohan promised</a> she'd prove her naysayers wrong on "SNL," and hinted that she'd poke fun at her previous legal issues on the show. Of course, from her opening monologue to an appearance in a "scared straight" skit, she did just that. And while folks can argue how effectively she performed, ratings-wise, there's no debating she packed a punch.</P><P><object width="432" height="236"><param name="movie" value="http://www.hulu.com/embed/hKW9TDp340gIz6EIaJMflA"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.hulu.com/embed/hKW9TDp340gIz6EIaJMflA" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="440" height="248" allowFullScreen="true"></embed></object></p>

'Men In Black' Star Will Smith's Energy Needs To Be 'Harnessed'
'While I'd be turned here directing Josh Brolin, Will Smith would be punching me in my kidneys,' 'MIB3' director Barry Sonnenfeld says.
By Kara Warner

No matter what you love most about the "Men in Black" franchise, the most compelling aspect of the sci-fi/action films — despite all their otherworldly and impressive visual effects — is the charm of their star and all-around likable actor Will Smith as Agent J. The former "Fresh Prince" is known for being a ball of excitable, positive energy on set, but according to "Men in Black 3" director Barry Sonnenfeld, sometimes that energy can get a little dangerous.
"Usually, while I'd be turned here directing Josh Brolin, Will Smith would be punching me in my kidneys," he told MTV News recently. "In fact, at the end of this movie, I went into the hospital because Will had torn my rotator cuff. On 'Wild Wild West' he broke my hand in five places, so Will's gotta have his energy harnessed a little bit, at least when he's working with me. I don't think he ever went around punching Michael Mann [who directed Smith in 2001's 'Ali'], let me just say that."
We then asked Sonnenfeld if there were any repercussions for Smith with all this on-set abuse.
"I told him that if he didn't stop hitting me that I would direct 'Men in Black 4' and hire his son to play young Agent J," Sonnenfeld joked. "So maybe that will make him calm down a little bit."
It should also be known that Smith's acting skills were a little rusty when he arrived on set to begin work on "MIB 3," which required some lighthearted finessing from Sonnenfeld and extra practice from Smith.
"On the first day of photography, we filmed Will on a blue-screen stage having to jump down [from the top of the Chrysler building], and what was great about it was that he hadn't acted in three years and was really bad," Sonnenfeld recalled of one of his favorite moments during filming. "Luckily, we cut out the bad stuff, but that first take we did after he hadn't acted in three years, I was sweating because he was no good. After I yelled, 'Cut!' Will said, 'Baz, I can do better! I'm really terrible. I haven't acted in three years, I'm really rusty!' And within a day or two, it all worked out fine. But man, it was interesting. You know how they say 'Once you learn how to ride a bicycle, you never forget?' Well, Will forgot how to act for the first day or two. Luckily he wasn't acting with other actors or it would have been really embarrassing."

Billboard Music Awards Belong To Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift
Show also features tributes to Whitney Houston, Donna Summer, MCA and Robin Gibb.
By Gil Kaufman
<P>Sunday night's (May 20) <i>Billboard</i> Music Awards were a bittersweet affair, balancing the promise of decades of entertainment from a new generation of record-smashing young artists like Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift with fond memories of a number of recently departed musical icons.</P><P>In a three-hour show heavy on performances, chart staples <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lmfao/artist.jhtml">LMFAO</a> helped kicked the show off with a typically hyped performance of their inescapable party anthems that featured a cabbage-patching teddy bear and zebra and more animal prints than a Flintstones family reunion.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="2012 Billboard Awards Highlights" id="id:1685461" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> was the night's first winner, taking the Top Social Artist award for his huge online presence. The singer swaggered up to the stage and, in an uncharacteristically emotional moment, said, "I just want to say how much of a blessing it's been ... the past three or four years, growing up in front of everybody. ... I want to thank all my fans, because the Internet is where I got my start, and all my fans have helped me get to this position."</P><P>Co-host Julie Bowen took a moment out of the program early on to pay tribute to late Bee Gees member <a href="/news/articles/1685459/robin-gibb-bee-gees-charts.jhtml">Robin Gibb</a>, who died earlier in the day Sunday after a long battle with cancer. The night also featured a <a href="/news/articles/1685464/whitney-houston-adam-yauch-billboard-music-awards.jhtml">touching tribute</a> to recently passed disco queen <a href="/news/articles/1685299/donna-summer-dead.jhtml">Donna Summer</a> by Natasha Bedingfield and a segment devoted to <a href="/news/articles/1679029/whitney-houston-dead.jhtml">music legend Whitney Houston</a> with a medley of her indelible hits performed by John Legend and Jordin Sparks.</P><P>Daughter Bobbi Kristina accepted the <i>Billboard</i> Millennium Award on behalf of her late mother. "I just really want to say thank you to everyone who supported us through it all," she said. "Not just when it was good, but when it was bad too ... thank you <I>so</I> much for showing that much love, because she deserved it."</P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/perry_katy/artist.jhtml">Katy Perry</a> was handed the Spotlight Award for tying the record set by Michael Jackson of five #1 hits from the same album, for her handful of smashes from <I>Teenage Dream.</I> Dressed in a floor-length sparkling silver gown, her hair a muted dark purple, Perry said she was "incredibly honored" to be in the same category as someone like Jackson.</P><P>"Most of all, of course, I always say that the people have the power, so I want to say thank you to the glittering, gorgeous community of fans out there," she added to wild applause, while finding a spare few seconds to plug her upcoming <a href="/news/articles/1685370/katy-perry-part-of-me-movie-poster.jhtml">3-D concert film, "Part of Me."</a> Oh, and she said she couldn't wait to do shots later that night with her 91-year-old granny, who was in the audience.</P><P>The ladies had a great night, as <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/swift__taylor/artist.jhtml">Taylor Swift</a> was honored with the <i>Billboard</i> Woman of the Year award, acknowledging her stadium full of impressive credits, including a place as the only woman in music history to score three #1 albums in a row, each of which has sold more than 5 million copies. Swift, 22, dressed in a flowing red evening gown and ever gracious, thanked her legions of fans, saying, "I just love you so much, I'm just so humbled and honored by this."</P><P>As Miley Cyrus noted, you're only new to the game once, so it was fitting that red-hot rapper <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/wiz_khalifa/artist.jhtml">Wiz Khalifa</a> best the competition for the Top New Artist trophy. "She's my world and she puts up with my crazy butt, too," he smiled, as Rose beamed from her seat in the audience.</P><P>Some other men got a bit of attention as well, with an absent Lil Wayne beating out Chris Brown, Drake, Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber for Male Artist of the Year.</P><P>Hot 100 Song of the Year was a tight race featuring smashes from Adele, Perry, Maroon 5 and Pitbull. But could it have gone to anyone but LMFAO for "Party Rock Anthem"? With six weeks atop the Hot 100, the uncle/nephew duo scored the third longest-running top 10 hit of all time. "This is a dream come true," said singer Redfoo. A short time later, Khalifa shouted out the <a href="/news/articles/1684552/adam-yauch-mca-remember-tribute-beastie-boys-dead.jhtml">Beastie Boys' MCA</a> before LMFAO were up on the stage again for the Top Duo or Group prize.</P><P>Brown got his chance a bit later with a win in the R&B Artist of the Year category, Foster the People took Top Rock Song for "Pumped Up Kicks," Coldplay were named Top Rock Artist, U2 Top Touring Act, Lady Gaga Top Dance Artist and an Icon Award for Stevie Wonder.
