Usher's Looking 4 Myself Represents An 'Evolution'

'The last three years of my life have been extremely experimental in style, lifestyle, in music and in fun,' Usher tells MTV News.
By Christina Garibaldi

Usher's seventh studio album may be titled Looking 4 Myself, but judging from the sound of his latest effort, he's found what he's looking for. Although the musical landscape has drastically changed over the years, unlike most artists, Usher has consistently evolved with it. He takes some risks with this album, and let's face it: He's earned the right to do just that.

Usher has called his latest album's sound "revolutionary pop" and that's exactly what it is. Looking 4 Myself takes his fans on a musical journey that has the singer experimenting with different sounds and working with different producers, but at the same time sticking with what he does best — making infectious music that gets people on their feet and in the clubs.

Usher himself admits that this album is unlike anything he's done, and he recently told MTV News that he credits his life experiences as the real inspiration behind this new sound.

"It is an experience that was kind of based off of the places that I've gone and the music that I've listened to, the styles that I've been inspired by and also some of the emotions that I've been able to feel," Usher said. "You know, for me, every album should represent kind of an evolution. The last three years of my life have been extremely experimental in style, lifestyle, in music and in fun. I travel to different places, met and sat with different artists, made a lot of friends, and in doing that I created new music."

One can tell that Usher took his time with this album, meticulously picking out each beat and working with producers he's never worked with before. He teamed up with Diplo, who produced the bold, artistic lead single, "Climax," Swedish House Mafia and the late Amy Winehouse's producer, Salaam Remi. Mixing these new producers with veterans like will.i.am, Max Martin and Pharrell, Usher found himself with a sound that mixes retro, electro and R&B.

"I think when making this album, it was about what felt good. After I had an understanding of different styles, I began to find the music that I felt comfortable with, even though it was a little bit different," Usher said. "I would find the melody and the emotion in it, most of the time it's a beat, it's a beat on the guitar or the piano, and then the melody finds its way and then the words begin to find a way. A lot of them came from travel so I thought back to where I was, kind of took my mental diary out and began to take myself back to that experience to what I think the people were experiencing or what I felt in that moment."

Looking 4 Myself drops Tuesday, June 12.

Are you excited for Usher's album? Let us know in the comments.

Lady Gaga Posts Photo Of Bruises Following Onstage Concussion

'Still remiss if I should go outside, with this clonker,' Gaga writes about the larger bruise on her cheek.

Lady Gaga has proven her mental toughness time and again, but even she had to admit that the walloping she took onstage at a show in New Zealand on Sunday threw her for a loop.

Emerging from hours of sleep. The comment was accompanied by a photo of Gaga laying in bed looking disheveled, her hair a mess, with a large bruise on her left cheek and what appeared to be the beginnings of a shiner under her left eye. "Still remiss if I should go outside, with this clonker I may be of questionable styling," she added.

Earlier on Monday she assured fans that she was on the mend, tweeting, "Thank you so much for all the thoughtful messages. Gaga, who bent down to pick up a prop machine gun during the performance of "Judas," staggered a bit and rubbed her head before briefly walking off the stage. But, a short time later, she was right back at it, performing 16 more songs before calling it a night.

Later in the gig, she told the audience, "I want to apologize. I did hit my head and I think I may have a concussion. But don't you worry, I will finish this show." The singer's make-up artist, Tara Savelo, tweeted about the incident on Sunday, writing, "Gaga has a concussion but she is going to be okay. Can't believe she finished the show."

Madonna Targets Lady Gaga With 'Express Yourself'/ 'Born This Way' Mashup

'Star Trek' Villain Forces Kirk To Grow, Chris Pine Says

Benedict Cumberbatch's character 'not just a blood-dripping-from-the-fangs bad guy,' Pine explains to MTV News.
By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Chris Pine

When J.J. Abrams got the opportunity to helm one of the most beloved franchises of all time, he took "Star Trek" literally where no man has gone before. The alternate timeline of his reboot laid down the law that this "Star Trek" can and will go anywhere its creators want.

When MTV News spoke to the captain of the Starship Enterprise, Chris Pine, his carefully measured words praised the work from Abrams and his screenwriters — Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof — on the upcoming sequel.

"There is so much happening in their script. I can't say much of anything," Pine told MTV News while promoting his next film, Friday's "People Like Us." "They come from TV land, all of them: J.J., Bob, Alex and Damon. They've worked together in the highest-pressure situation in television for years. That machine is well-oiled."

The creative team's background in television is what Pine said allows them to change things on the fly and continually improve the film. "What you also get in that circumstance is it's a constantly evolving beast — the script, the material, how it's going to look, how J.J.'s going to shoot it," he said. "There is nothing set in stone, which is tremendously frightening, but also extremely exhilarating, especially when it's like a finely tuned racecar. They just know how to do it. In this constantly evolution, the script that they had written kept getting better and better."

For anyone familiar with the crew's previous work, which includes "Lost" and most recently "Prometheus," it shouldn't come as a surprise that Pine complimented the mythical qualities of the screenplay.

"What they're so good at is this kind of mythic reinvention. They're really good at writing myth, and these characters — I think what people will find with everybody — is that these characters go on mythic arcs," Pine said. "It's all about growing up. These are young men and young women, and they are not the crew that we know from the series. They're developing into that. It's a long way to go there."

Even with mystery surrounding the entire production, fans are most desperate for answers when it comes to just one aspect of the sequel: Benedict Cumberbatch joined the film as a villain, whose identity has yet to be revealed. Pine complimented the actor, but couldn't say much more than that the villain will bring out new qualities in Kirk.

"It is structured so that the antagonist brings out all of the qualities in Kirk that need to happen in order for Kirk to grow," Pine said. "As you know from Benedict, just watching him, vocally, he's fascinating. He's got this deep resonate voice. He's a fascinating face. He's a lovely guy and just super smart. You want to see something firing in his brain, so he's not just a blood-dripping-from-the-fangs bad guy. Benedict brings those kinds of smarts."

Lady Gaga's Health Worries Elton John

'She is frail, and she doesn't eat when she should,' John says of Gaga in new interview with The Guardian.
By John Mitchell

Elton John is concerned about his friend Lady Gaga's health, telling The Guardian that Mother Monster's hectic touring and work schedule leave her "frail" and undernourished.

Perhaps more disconcerting is that John said Gaga's parents, to whom she is famously quite close, worry about her welfare as well. "I look at Gaga, and I think, 'How does she do it?' I talk to her mum and dad about it. They worry," he said.

"She is frail, and she doesn't eat when she should do, and she's a girl, and it's tougher for a girl. She works really hard," John continued. "She will be in Denmark one night and Saudi Arabia the next. I know how tiny she is, and I do worry about her, yes."

Gaga and John are so close that the music legend chose the "Born This Way" singer to be the godmother of his one-year-old son, Zachary. The pair have collaborated artistically multiple times, including a medley performance of their hits at the 2010 Grammys and on the duet "Hello Hello" for the animated 2011 film "Gnomeo & Juliet." Gaga has said that the two will duet again for her next album, which she is reportedly working on concurrently with her "Born This Way Ball" Tour.

"My next duet, I believe, will be with Elton," Gaga told British talk-show host Alan Carr late last year. "I'm already working on my next album, and I played him a song that I wrote, and he really loved it. I don't want to give anything [else] away!"

John's concerns for Gaga's health are not without precedent. In January 2010, the pop star was forced to cancel a concert in West Lafayette, Indiana, when she experienced shortness of breath and a rapid heartbeat backstage immediately before the performance was set to begin. After that frightening incident, Gaga canceled dates in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Wallingford, Connecticut, based on doctor's recommendations that she take time to recover from exhaustion.

Just two months later, Gaga appeared on the verge of collapse by the conclusion of a "Monster Ball" show in Auckland, New Zealand. Video from the performance shows Gaga sitting and even lying down during the final song of the evening, "Bad Romance."

'Beyoncé is the perfect example of what a solo artist should strive for,' 'Inside Out' singer/songwriter tells MTV News.

Performing at the International Dance Music Awards in Miami in March and launching her first music video for her club single "Inside Out" are just two of Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter NiRé AllDai's endeavors since first stepping out as an artist. Her journey, which today sees her selecting songs — including tracks produced by Timbaland and the Stargate camp — for her upcoming debut album, actually began as a writer for other producers and artists.

"I've always been an artist," NiRé told MTV News. "But my manager was like, 'Let's work this [writer] angle,' and it worked well because I was able to build a lot of really great relationships with dope producers who ended up helping me on my project."

"I did a first single for Starshell, who was Mary J. "I had a chance to write with Mary and Swizz [Beatz] and Timbaland and Dr. Dre, who's a really good friend of mine."

After getting her writing chops up, meeting the right management and finding her A&R at Capitol Records, NiRé was ready to give it her all for a chance to perform for the masses. Her fearlessness, fashion and electricity are depicted vividly in her video for "Inside Out," which was directed by Hannah Lux Davis, who also directed videos for Shinedown and Anjulie, among others. NiRé is inspired by some of music's biggest, baddest stars, included among them Missy Elliott, Lil Wayne, and Beyoncé.

"Beyoncé is the perfect example of what a solo artist should strive for," NiRé said. She wouldn't stop."

NiRé AllDai will release her second club single, "Hella Bad," soon, with a radio single to follow. She plans to release her as-yet-untitled debut album sometime this year, and she also has her fingers crossed for another, long-awaited opportunity.

"I've been looking forward to the Detox, [album]' NiRé said.
ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey — The "year of 4" continues.

Four months after giving birth to her first child — an arrival announced last August at the MTV VMAs — Beyoncé returned to the stage Saturday night, on the second of a four-night run in this East Coast resort city. And it was a spectacular fitting her rising icon status.

So what kinds of clues get 20somethings calling you "the greatest performer" of your generation? Well, it's in the details. For one, Revel, the sparkling, 6.3-million-square-foot beachfront destination that played host to Beyoncé's comeback, devoted a channel on its guest-room flat-screen TVs solely to B-related content: no weather broadcasts, nary a "Housewife" and no commercial breaks; just videos, all-star performances and more, all through Memorial Day weekend. It was evident in the distance traveled, too, with fans telling MTV News they'd made cross-country pilgrimages, while still others came from as far as Tokyo and South Africa to hail Queen B.

But those are just the hints, peripheral proof. The presence of First Lady Michelle Obama at last night's concert left little doubt that the little girl from Houston, who joined a girl group and then struck out on her own, had seen another benchmark in her relatively young career. After exchanging letters in recent months, with each calling the other a role model for girls, Obama turned up in a sleeveless green sheath waving like royalty from a balcony in Ovation Hall.

A little after 10 p.m., as the pounding opening march from "End of Time" kicked in, Beyoncé appeared in silhouette; the sequins were hard to make out but the wind-blown mane was impossible to miss. Finally, B, stunning in hot pink Stuart Weitzman heels and a beaded body suit, appeared on the massive stage backed by her dancers.

"Atlantic City, snap your fingers," she commanded, launching into "Love on Top." Without missing a step of the New Edition-inspired choreography, B powered through the song's modulations in an extended vocal showcase. Then she took an exaggerated pause, as if to catch her breath (or to bask in the adulation?), before belting out a final coda. The 30-year-old's comeback was officially under way.

Pushing through hits from her debut solo effort, including "Naughty Boy" and the dancehall-infused "Baby Boy," and Sasha Fierce smashes like "Diva," B defied all post-partum laws as she kept pace with Frank Gatson's acrobatic dance style. ("Y'all don't know how hard I had to work. I had to lose 60 pounds!" she laughed to the crowd later. "They had me eating lettuce.") And just as songs like "Single Ladies" and "Run the World (Girls)" are meant to serve as empowerment manuals for women, it became clear last night that Beyoncé's choreography is meant to do the same: a series of sensual quickstep moves that revolve around the hips and legs. It showed in the Fosse-style swing and formations on songs like "Get Me Bodied," and the strut-heavy footwork on "Freakum Dress."

"Sasha Fierce disappeared, but y'all bringing her back," B joked midway through the euphoric two-hour set.

For one of our favorite numbers, "Party," the 4 singer donned full-on showgirl regalia in a heady rendition that saw confetti coming from the roof and dice-shaped beach balls being tossed through the crowd as dancers in large feathered headdresses magically turned up in the aisles.

There were ballads, of course, at Ovation Hall, the more memorable among them a tribute to Whitney Houston and a cover of Lauryn Hill's classic "Ex Factor." And if Beyoncé reminded us of what we've lost in those gut-wrenching covers — she proved, too, that she's more than ready to carry the weight on her shoulders.

Share your reviews of Beyoncé's Revel shows in the comments!

Ed Sheeran Breaks Down One Direction, Taylor Swift Collaborations

British singer/songwriter says he was surprised by 'how cool' Swift is.

If you still don't know who 21-year-old British singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran is, then you might want to bone up. The folkie up-and-comer is already being embraced by some of the biggest pop acts on the planet as he launches a full-on U.S. invasion of his own.

Having already worked with the boys of One Direction on their album Up All Night, he revealed he's going to work with the guys again later this summer as they prep their sophomore release.

"I wrote a couple of songs when I was 17 that One Direction want for their next album," he said, via Perez Hilton. "I'm going into the studio in August to produce the tracks for them."

In addition to working with the British boy banders, he also recently hit the studio with Taylor Swift, as she prepares her follow-up to Speak Now, her smash 2010 release.

"It's such a pleasure to have people like her in the music industry — she has the talent and is so down to earth, head and shoulders," he told Pop Crush, adding that he was surprised by "just how cool she was."

He went on to say that he was taken aback by her maturity when they hit the studio together. "I've never really met acts like [her]. You meet people like Elton [John] who have been in the game for 30-40 years who are wise and old and been at it for a long time — and Taylor's been in it for six years and she's 22," he explained. "And you hear horror stories about younger musicians who kind of go a bit off the rails, but she's so together and so kind of professional and knows what she wants, but ... isn't too harsh — she's just a really sweet gentle person — so yeah, that's what surprised me, is that she was sound."

Sheeran recently dropped his own debut album, +, Stateside, where he landed at #5 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart.

Usher Had Plans To Record With Amy Winehouse

'It could have been one of the most incredible records ever,' he says of his attempt to record with Winehouse.

It's one of the great R&B duets that never was. While Usher was working on his seventh studio album, Looking 4 Myself
, he was determined to take fans on a musical journey and experiment with sounds
 he'd never explored before.

So, in addition to teaming up with Diplo for the seductive lead single, "Climax,"
, as well as EDM giants Swedish House Mafia, Usher said he sought out producer Salaam Remi because he was very interested in doing a song with Remi protege, Amy Winehouse,
before the singer died unexpectedly died at age 27 in July 2011. "We met and we talked about it for a moment when I saw her," Usher said of a brief sit-down with the troubled crooner to discuss the potential soul summit.

"There was a few conversations that took place, but we never quite made it to it ... I would have loved it." One of those talks occurred while the unlikely duo were shopping at the ritzy London department store Selfridges. "I was shopping and she was doing some private shopping and she came out and we kind of crossed each other's [paths] and, [I was like] 'Is that Amy Winehouse?' ... And before you know it we talked and exchanged information and I invited her to a show ... and she didn't come."

Winehouse was out of the country at the time and sent a relative to the gig in her stead, but that missed connection has stuck with Usher to this day. "It could have been one of the most incredible records ever," he said. "A voice like that comes once in a lifetime."

Usher still wanted to get in the studio with Remi, and though it was a hard time for the producer, the pair met in New York and worked it out. "The style and the sound that we worked, I felt would definitely compliment what he does as a producer and what I have to offer."

The story that the two explored on "Sins of My Father" was a new one for Usher, who had never spoken about his feelings for his dad in song before. "That was a hard one, but he gave me a palette that really worked."

"The tour starts at the end of September ... by the end of 2013 we're gonna hit the whole world," he explained. "He has been watching a tremendous amount of Michael Jackson concerts from the '80s and '90s. And he has been talking to me about how Michael incorporated magic and pyro and reveals and he wants to bring in that. [But] still do that acoustic thing, but he wants to take it to a whole new level.

"It's just really exciting," he continued. "Nothing makes him happier than being onstage. So it's gonna be fun to get back onto the road. I think he was an amazing performer before, but his level of dance and musicianship and his range [has grown]. He's a veteran now. I think he wants to take it to a completely new level."

Not only will Bieber stay busy in the music world, but Mark Wahlberg notes that things are also chugging along with their long-teased, in-the-works basketball movie. The actor insists they are inching closer to a start date. And, Wahlberg is co-signing Bieber's acting abilities.

"Obviously, [Bieber] is a very good athlete. People have seen him on MTV; he can play. But I also really think he can act," he said. "There's not going to be any shortage of pushing him in getting that kind of strong performance out of him, if we get to make the movie. We're just going to have to make him realize that he's playing a character so he can't have the same hairdo," he joked.
