Justin Bieber Pictured In Studio With Kanye West

Pair look like they're working on songs for Bieber's upcoming Believe album.

<P>Perhaps Kanye West doesn't have to sleep like the rest of us mere mortals. That might explain how the rapper is seemingly everywhere at once these days: squiring <a href="/news/articles/1683892/kim-kardashian-kanye-west-romance.jhtml">Kim Kardashian all over New York</a>, shooting a mysterious <a href="/news/articles/1683847/kanye-west-kid-cudi-video-project-middle-east.jhtml">mini-movie in Qatar</a>&#8232; and popping into a recording studio to work on tracks with pal <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>. </P><P> </P><P>While the 18-year-old pop star has been wrapping up work on his upcoming album, <a href="/news/articles/1683335/justin-bieber-believe-the-voice.jhtml"><I>Believe</I>,</a>&#8232; due out June 19, he got a visit from West. I love this thing we call music!" </P><P> </P><P>Bieber's been giving his fans plenty of tantalizing sneak peeks over the past week. In addition to announcing the release date during an appearance on "The Voice," he also brought along a teaser for his as-yet-unreleased "Boyfriend" video. After that glimpse, he was spotted <a href="/news/articles/1683642/justin-bieber-boyfriend-music-video-kiss.jhtml">shooting new scenes</a>&#8232; for the highly anticipated clip in which he was kissing a mystery brunette on set. </P><P> </P><P>"The concept of this video, I mean, it's not like a steady concept," Bieber <a href="/news/articles/1682156/justin-bieber-explains-boyfriend-video.jhtml">told MTV News</a>&#8232; while shooting the video back in March. "It's not like 'Justin follows this girl to this spot.' No, it's a bunch of amazing scenes: like a fire scene, we have an ice scene. </P><P> </P><P>"It's kind of like bouncing back and forth," he said. "And then there's scenes of me and just a bunch of girl dancers, and just some great shots, great artistic shots, great shots of me smiling. It's fun." </P><P>He also tweeted out the <a href="/news/articles/1684079/justin-bieber-believe-album-cover.jhtml">cover art</a>&#8232; on Friday, a simple black-and-white close-up of his face with the word "BELIEVE" stamped in a yellow caution-tape font underneath. The album will reportedly feature a song reacting to the <a href="/news/articles/1683857/justin-bieber-believe.jhtml">paternity suit</a>&#8232; filed by a 20-year-old California woman who claimed she became pregnant with Bieber's baby after a brief bathroom hook-up at an October 2010 concert; the suit was dropped in November. </P><P> </P><P>In addition to whatever Kanye and Bieber cooked up, the album will also feature a <a href="/news/articles/1683050/justin-bieber-taylor-swift-collaboration.jhtml">duet with Taylor Swift</a>&#8232;, as well as magic made with Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine and Drake.</p>

'Avengers' Version Of Hulk 'More Accessible,' Mark Ruffalo Says

'He's got a wry sense of humor about himself,' actor tells MTV News at Tribeca Film Festival.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Of all the actors coming together to form the Avengers, Mark Ruffalo decidedly had the most to prove. After two previous Hulk films left fans largely unsatisfied, a new actor in the role could either lead to another letdown or, finally, to a version that felt true to the comics.

Fortunately for Ruffalo, early reviews of "The Avengers" overwhelming point to his version of Bruce Banner as one of the highlights of the film. MTV News caught up with Ruffalo at the closing-night ceremonies for the Tribeca Film Festival to get his take on the Hulk's positive reception and to find out what was different this time around.

Ruffalo felt the pressure that came with the role of the Hulk as soon as he signed on to be the third actor in as many films. "It was very daunting. I've never had a part so harshly reviewed before I even shot a single frame of film," he said. "The fanboys had a lot to say about it — granted, they had a great deal of care about this part and a lot of sentimentality as well, as do I, growing up on it."

The actor said that the latest technology gave him the biggest advantage over the first two iterations of the character. "There have been other great performances as Banner. The only real edge that I had was that the technology had changed so much since that last movie that I actually got to play the Hulk," Ruffalo said.

This latest version of the Hulk takes a different approach to the character, giving him a dry sense of humor about his condition, but Ruffalo gave credit to both Eric Bana and Edward Norton for helping lay the foundation in the first two films.

"I just think it's a natural progression of the other performances. When you find the guy at this point, he's tired of running. He's got a wry sense of humor about himself," Ruffalo said. "He's ready to turn and face the world. He's got a charming world-weariness that's kind of knocked the edges off of him and made him slightly more accessible."

Check out everything we've got on "The Avengers."

Katy Perry Says New Album Will Be 'Real F---ing Dark'

Star also reveals she was set to appear in award-winning film 'The Help.'

<P>Many fans have been curious about what pop star <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/perry_katy/artist.jhtml">Katy Perry</a>'s next record will sound like &#8212; especially considering her much-publicized <a href="/news/articles/1676631/katy-perry-russell-brand-divorce-details.jhtml">divorce from comedian Russell Brand</a> and the heavy recent single "Part of Me." Lady Gaga's 26th Birthday: Her 10 Best MTV Quotes!

As Mother Monster celebrates her birthday, MTV News takes a look back at her most-interesting confessions ... so far!
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>Listen up, Little Monsters: It's Mother Monster's 26th birthday! And in that quarter of a century (plus one year!), <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> has managed to reinvent the pop wheel with her eccentric persona and pumping, politically charged dance music. When asked how she planned to celebrate another year, she simply told a Monster on <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga" target="_blank">Twitter</a>, "Quinceanera." </P><P> </P><P>While we'll be Quincea&#241;era-ing in spirit, we <i>will</i> celebrate her colorful life and career by remembering 10 of the most-revealing bites she's shared with MTV News. So, dabble on some glitter, put on your best wig, platforms and leotard, and let's take a stroll down memory lane &#8212; in no particular order. </P><P> </P><P><B>10.</B> In 2009, Gaga sat down and explained that when <a href="/news/articles/1610702/lady-gaga-says-kanye-west-saw-past-her-poker-face.jhtml">"Poker Face" was re-imagined by Kanye West and Kid Cudi</a> as "I Poke Her Face" (later changed to "Make Her Say"), she felt that it was time for someone to get the true meaning of the lady-love euphemism. </P><P> </P><P><center><a href="http://www.mtv.com/content/news/2012/lady_gaga_26th_birthday_soundboard/"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/shared/promoimages/bands/l/lady_gaga/birthday_soundboard_032712/420x300.jpg"></a><br> </P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/content/news/2012/lady_gaga_26th_birthday_soundboard/"><b>Check out our Lady Gaga soundboard, and leave a birthday message for Mother Monster!</b></a></center> </P><P> </P><P>"It's funny, because a lot of my fans were like, 'Gaga, Kanye wrote a song ... and it's not about what your record's about. Your record is about gambling, and this song is about dirty sex things,' " she recalled. "I said to them, 'You're wrong. Kanye was right,' " she explained, laughing. </P><P> </P><P>"That's exactly what this song is about. The record is about how I used to fantasize about women when I was with my boyfriend. It was really exciting that he had so much insight into what the song was about. He's a cool guy." </P><P> </P><P><B>9.</B> Gaga's pop-music kinship with <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyonc&#233;</a> has been well-documented in two songs: G's <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/lady-gaga/741160/telephone.jhtml#artist=3061469">"Telephone"</a> and B's <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/beyonce/455581/video-phone-extended-remix.jhtml#artist=1236911">"Video Phone."</a> When Gaga headed to shoot the Hype Williams-directed <a href="/news/articles/1626441/lady-gaga-paid-tribute-to-beyonce-in-video-phone-clip.jhtml">video for "Video Phone,"</a> she had this message for the team: "I said, 'I want to do you in your video, and I want to tribute you. I want to dress up like you,' " Gaga recalled telling her co-star. "And Hype Williams ... was so excited. He was like, 'Gaga, I want no makeup on your face.' It was really stripped down &#8212; real Beyonc&#233; hair, and we wore the same outfit in the video, and I [paid tribute to] her." </P><P> </P><P><B>8.</B> Gaga's love for her hometown of NYC is hardly surprising, and she shared on the <a href="/news/articles/1664761/lady-gaga-marry-the-night-fernando-garibay.jhtml">MTV special "Inside the Outside"</a> that when she sat down to write the track <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/lady-gaga/742547/marry-the-night-official-video.jhtml#artist=3061469">"Marry the Night,"</a> "he" was the perfect muse to inspire the song. "It's never gonna go away, the tan of New York never goes away," she explained about always identifying with the city that bred her. </P><P> </P><P><B>7.</B> During the same special, Gaga opened up about her <i>other</i> inspiration &#8212; <a href="/news/articles/1664709/lady-gaga-fans.jhtml">her fans</a> &#8212; adding, "The biggest surprise to me has been my relationship with my fans. They've changed my life. The fans are the thing that you can't learn; they were the instrument in the music that nobody taught me about." </P><P> </P><P><B>6.</B> Always politically charged and motivated, Gaga has made it her mission to not only make chart-topping music, but also be a voice for the disenfranchised. When she sat down for <a href="/news/articles/1669351/lady-gaga-president.jhtml">"MTV First: Lady Gaga"</a> in 2011, she explained that, despite her strong political beliefs, she wouldn't want to run for office. </P><P> </P><P>"Well, first of all, I wouldn't want to be president for the day," she said. "And I say that because I really, for myself, it's important that my message, although it has political implications, I like to keep myself separate because politics can constrain things," she continued. "So, our message can be completely free of any politics, and we can just surge forward." </P><P> </P><P><B>5.</B> During that <a href="/news/articles/1669370/lady-gaga-mermaid-sex-you-and-i.jhtml">"MTV First,"</a> when she debuted her <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/lady-gaga/742495/you-and-i.jhtml#artist=3061469">video for "Yo&#252; and I,"</a> the singer discussed how difficult love can sometimes be and how her art explores that theme. "Sometimes in love, you can't make it work," she said. "No matter what you do, there's this giant boundary between you and someone else. So, that's what it's about: perceiving in your imagination that there's something magical inside of you that you can make it work." </P><P> </P><P><B>4.</B> At the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/ontv/vma/2011">2011 VMAs</a>, she pulled the ultimate costume change by appearing as her male alter-ego, <a href="/news/articles/1669944/lady-gaga-jo-calderone-monsters-fans.jhtml">Jo Calderone</a>. Gaga, as Jo, took home the Moonman for her fist-pumping equality anthem <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/lady-gaga/742058/born-this-way.jhtml#artist=3061469">"Born This Way."</a> Afterward, Jo explained, "She was texting me after the award, after I picked it up for her, and she just said, 'You know, more than anything I've ever gotten before, this means more to me, because "Born This Way" is about the fans and the fans are more important to me than anything I do; more important than f---ing breathing, you know?' " </P><P> </P><P><B>3.</B> In late 2011, Gaga released her semi-autobiographical <a href="/news/articles/1675400/lady-gaga-marry-the-night-costumes.jhtml">video for "Marry the Night,"</a> noting that history can be reinterpreted for her art, if need be. "This was one of the first times that the fashion didn't propel so much of the story line," she explained. "It is autobiographical, so the entire story's true, and it's through the lens of how I choose to repaint my past." </P><P> </P><P><B>2.</B> Behind every great woman is a great Haus. Gaga's famed, rarely spotted, <a href="/news/articles/1625758/lady-gaga-explains-her-haus-of-gaga-no-one-gets-it.jhtml">Haus of Gaga</a> are the folks who help create the live shows, fashions and accessories she wears. And they mean everything to her. "They're my best friends," she said. "I'm not really sure what the world thinks ... but I do hear things like, 'Who is the Haus of Gaga?' and 'Are you putting out a fashion line?' And no one gets it. It's not a commodity. It's not something that's meant to be sold. </P><P> </P><P>"It's a real bond and relationship, and that's what I think music and art is about," she said. "They are my heart and soul. They believe in me, and they look at me like a mother and daughter and sister, with pride and love." </P><P> </P><P><B>1.</B> In the end, everything Gaga does is for her art, and there's no place Gaga feels more at home than onstage in front of thousands of screaming fans. "I don't see the live show as extension of the record at all, it's meant to be a completely different experience with the artist, with myself. I want my fans to come and go to a party," <a href="/news/articles/1610781/lady-gaga-on-success-the-turning-point-for-me-was-the-gay-community.jhtml">she told MTV News</a>. </P><P> </P><P>"I want them to watch the show and think, 'I'm so f---ing cool that I am here right now.' It's about them. It's about love. It's about art. The show is meant to bring a tremendous feeling and sentiment of escapism." </P><P> </P><P><i>Share your birthday wishes for Gaga in the comments below!</i></p>

Pitbull Goes 'Back In Time' On 'Men In Black' Video Set

Mr. Worldwide walks MTV News through his 'Back in Time' music video set.

Not only does the "Men in Black" movie franchise boast great acting and stunning visual effects, each of the three films features a pretty kicking soundtrack as well. For "Men in Black 3," which hits theaters May 25, Pitbull contributes the lead single, "Back in Time."

MTV News caught up with Mr. Worldwide on the Los Angeles set of the "Back in Time" video and he gave us a pretty cool walk-through.

"What we're doing here, to sum it up in layman's terms, is making history," Pit said. "The concept is basically all about the movie. The slogan for the movie is 'Back in Time.' In the record I say, 'In order to understand the future we have to go back in time.' "

The clip not only features "MIB3" movie scenes, it was actually filmed on the movie set, blending the Miami rapper's performance shots seamlessly into Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones' action shots. "As far as the sets that you see right now, it's just integrating and running parallel with everything that you see in the movie," Pitbull explained.

It was the Fresh Prince himself who recorded the theme songs — 1997's "Men in Black" and 2002's "Black Suits Comin' " — for the first two installments of the "MIB" trilogy. For the upcoming flick, Pit took over and used a sample of Mickey and Sylvia's 1950s classic "Love Is Strange" for inspiration.

Now that he's clocked his first collaboration with Big Willie, Pitbull hopes that they can work together some more. "I would love to follow in Will Smith's footsteps," he said. "We're working on the music for the movie, and hopefully, one day, we'll work in a movie together."

What do you think of Pitbull's "Back in Time" video? Tell us in the comments!

Justin Bieber Writes Song About Paternity Scandal

'I wrote about that situation,' singer admits during an album listening session Tuesday.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> isn't leaving behind last year's paternity scandal until he shares his two cents on the allegation &#8212; musically, at least. </P><P> </P><P>Just a day after his <a href="/news/articles/1683621/justin-bieber-paternity-accuser-message.jhtml">Twitter jab at 20-year-old Mariah Yeater</a>, the pop superstar held a listening session for his new album, <i>Believe,</i> and revealed that the paternity case is just one of many subject matters he covered on the project. </P><P> </P><P>According to the <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/17823463" target="_blank">BBC</a>, Bieber said his inspirations included "that girl &#8212; Mariah Yeater &#8212; who said she was going to have my baby," adding: "I wrote about that situation." </P><P> </P><P>When asked to choose his favorite song on the <a href="/news/articles/1683335/justin-bieber-believe-the-voice.jhtml">June 19 release</a>, Bieber struggled to answer. Kim Kardashian's Kanye Earrings And Other Celeb PDA

Kim's KW studs join a long line of creative romantic gestures in Hollywood.
By Kara Warner

<P>When it comes to the various ways in which celebrity couples offer up public displays of affection, the ante was raised yet again when <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1683636/kanye-west-kim-kardashian-nyc-spotted.jhtml">Kim Kardashian was spotted over the weekend</a> wearing earrings with the initials of rumored boyfriend <a href="/music/artist/west_kanye/artist.jhtml">Kanye West</a>. </P><P> </P><P>But Kim is hardly the first star to wear her heart on her sleeve (or in her ear). Let's take a look back at five other unique celeb PDA: </P><P> </P><P><big><b>Tattoos</b></big><br> </P><P>No matter how well De Beers has ingrained their slogan "A diamond is forever" into our brains, nothing says "I love you forever (hopefully)" like getting a tattoo of your lover's initials, name and/or face. There are so many examples of celebrity couples who have expressed their love via this method that we could write a separate story. The couples who immediately come to mind are Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey, who both got their first-ever ink in celebration of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1586974/mariah-carey-nick-cannon-wedding-photo-released.jhtml">their marriage</a>. Other examples: Tori Spelling's hubby Dean McDermott has his wife's face and d&#233;colletage on his arm, Marc Anthony had "Jennifer" on the inside of his wrist before their split, and David and Victoria Beckham. </P><P> </P><P><big><b>Blood Bonds</b></big><br> </P><P>Before there was Brangelina, there was the eyebrow-raising romance and eventual marriage between Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton. In addition to getting relationship-inspired tattoos to celebrate their love, Jolie surprised everyone by adorning her neck with an amulet that reportedly contained a <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/story?id=105269&page=1">few drops of Thornton's blood</a>. </P><P> </P><P> </P><P><big><b>Music Videos</b></big><br> </P><P>If you're a musician and in need of a love interest for your music video, why not invite your real-life love to make an appearance in said clip? In addition to several warm fuzzy stories that involve couples meeting on the sets of their music vids (Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelley, Enrique Iglesias and Anna Kournikova), there are plenty who have featured their boyfriends and girlfriends. <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1682676/jennifer-lopez-dance-again-boyfriend-videos.jhtml">Jennifer Lopez is <i>the</i> leading example</a>, first with Ben Affleck's cameo in "Jenny From the Block" and most recently with new love Casper Smart in "Dance Again." </P><P> </P><P><big><b> Social Media</b></big><br> </P><P>The advent of Twitter has brought the world a lot of things &#8212; over-sharing chief among them. We've become privy to the inner-workings of celebrity couples, thanks to their back-and-forth interaction on the social-networking site. Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher basically kicked things off by frequently tweeting cute musings back and forth. They are survived by Khlo&#233; and Lamar Odom, Carey Hart and Pink, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden, and Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey (again with the PDA!). </P><P> </P><P><big><b>Nail Art</b></big><br> </P><P>Before their very public breakup last year, Katy Perry took the whole PDA-by-body-art trend to another level when she showed up on the white carpet at the 2010 VMAs with then-husband <a href="http://style.mtv.com/2011/08/26/vma-katy-perry-nails/">Russell Brand's face printed onto her fingernails</a>. The gesture was in part due to the fact that Brand wasn't able to attend the awards show that year, along with a tribute factor celebrating the couple's initial introduction at the awards show in 2009. </P><P> </P><P><i>Where do Kim's Kanye earrings rank among celeb PDAs? Let us know what we missed in the comments!</i> </P><P> </P><P><center><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></center></p>

Exclusive 'Battleship' Clip Premieres Monday On MTV!

Stars Rihanna, Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgård and Brooklyn Decker will unveil clip during 'MTV First' at 7:56 p.m. ET Monday.

We still have a few more weeks to wait to find out which "Battleship" castmember utters the immortal phrase "You sunk my Battleship!" So in the meantime, we're offering up the exclusive premiere of a very special new clip from the film, along with the stars themselves, for "MTV First: Battleship."

Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgård, Rihanna and Brooklyn Decker will hit MTV's airwaves Monday, April 30, at 7:56 p.m. ET to premiere the exclusive clip, after which they will stick around for a meaty 30 minutes of Q&A on MTV.com hosted by MTV News' Josh Horowitz. Fans can get in on the action immediately by submitting video or text questions via MTV.com or via Twitter (using @MTVNews, hashtag #MTVFirst or #AskBattleship). During "MTV First," the four stars will also answer your Twitter questions and dish on the very latest news.

"Battleship" promises to be a true summer blockbuster in every way. It is an action-packed event movie with an A-list and very attractive cast.

"The movie is really the story of a younger brother (Kitsch) trying to grow up and be a man like [his older brother (Skarsgård)]," director Peter Berg told MTV News. "There just happens to be an alien invasion in the middle of it."

The "Friday Night Lights" director also promised that despite the "Transformers" comparisons, his film is "completely different."

"I think 'Transformers' is awesome," Berg said. "I think [director Michael] Bay did an incredible job with that film and I think when you sit through 4 minutes of 'Battleship,' you'll realize that they are two completely different experiences.

"Obviously, our big bosses who are concerned with making their money back have a vested interested in attaching themselves to other successful films. We don't think about that; we think about making our own movie, and I'm pretty confident that whether you love 'Battleship' or not, the issue of comparison to other films is pretty irrelevant."

The film hits theaters across the country May 18.

Don't forget to join Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna, Alexander Skarsgård and Brooklyn Decker for "MTV First: Battleship" on Monday, April 30, at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV!

Check out everything we've got on "Battleship."

Rihanna Ends Interview After Love-Life Questions

Pop star halts Australian interview when she's asked about her personal life.
By Kara Warner

<P>If there's one thing to admire about <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/rihanna/artist.jhtml">Rihanna</a>, it's the way she speaks her mind on sensitive issues. But during a recent interview with a reporter from the Australian talk show <a href="http://youtu.be/Bloo8I0rwhQ" target="_blank">"Sunrise,"</a> RiRi apparently didn't appreciate the line of questioning and abruptly ended their chat. </P><P> </P><P>Because Rihanna was in Australia to promote her upcoming movie <a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/movie/435857/moviemain.jhtml">"Battleship,"</a> the conversation began with a discussion about her future in films and whether she'll put her singing career on the back burner in favor of film. "I don't see why I can't do both," she said. "If I love both, then I'll do great at both. I love music, and after my first experience with movies, I can't wait to do more." </P><P> </P><P>One of those potential future films is tackling the coveted role of the late great <a href="/news/articles/1682310/rihanna-whitney-houston-biopic.jhtml">Whitney Houston in an upcoming biopic</a>, which Rihanna said would be a very emotional experience. "She's been someone that I've looked up to for so long," she said. "Her music is something that I've been very close to, so I guess it would be fulfilling as well as ... a lot of pressure." </P><P> </P><P>At this point in the interview the reporter brought up Rihanna's public persona and the pressures and frustrations associated with having all your day-to-day activities reported in the news &#8212; specifically when tabloids and gossip websites speculate about Rihanna's love life and <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/03/22/rihanna-dating-ashton-kutcher/">link her to other celebs, like Ashton Kutcher</a>. </P><P> </P><P>"[It's] very frustrating," Rihanna said, looking annoyed. "Almost as frustrating as being asked about it." </P><P> </P><P>"Yeah, you don't like going there?" the reporter asked in a diplomatic way. </P><P> </P><P>"I mean, what's the point?" Rihanna responded. </P><P> </P><P>"Well people are interested in you, you're a big star," the reporter added. </P><P> </P><P>"They are. And they're interested in a lot of things &#8212; a lot of things that don't matter," said a visibly irritated Rihanna. "Or shouldn't." </P><P> </P><P>The reporter added in voice-over at the end of the piece that the interview abruptly ended after Rihanna's last comment. </P><P> </P><P>This isn't the first time the topic of Rihanna's love life has halted an interview. Last month in London, Rihanna chastised a reporter at a press conference for <a href="/news/articles/1681980/rihanna-ashton-kutcher-not-dating.jhtml">bringing up the Ashton rumors</a>. "Wow, how disappointing was that question?" she asked in response. "I'm happy and I'm single, if that's what you're really asking." </P><P> </P><P><i>What do you think about Rihanna's reaction to the personal line of questioning? Let us know in the comments!</i> </P><P> </P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></p>

Tim Burton 'Never' Considered 'Dark Shadows' A Comedy

Director also opens up on 'Beetlejuice' sequel and whether he'd return to 'Batman.'
By John Mitchell, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Fans of the classic late-'60s soap "Dark Shadows" were surprised when the trailer for the film made it seem like director Tim Burton had reimagined his subject matter as a farcical comedy rather than the dark, Gothic soap opera fans remembered. Since then, there have been whispers that the film is far darker than it is being marketed, so we went straight to the source to find out what is really up with the buzzed-about film.

At CinemaCon 2012, MTV News asked Burton if he felt the trailer is reflective of his film, which hits theaters May 11, and while he admits there are humorous elements to the film, he said he doesn't believe it can be classified as a comedy.

"Everything that's in [the trailer] is in the movie," Burton told MTV News. "It's a funny film for me, because I never considered it a comedy. I was always trying to capture the weird vibe of 'Dark Shadows,' which is a weird thing to try to capture. It was a weird daytime soap opera."

Burton, a longtime "Shadows" fan who said he "recalls the show affectionately," said that whatever humor is in the film is there because the situation Barnabas is in when he is unearthed 200 years after being buried is innately humorous.

"It's not like I'm being campy with it or anything," Burton said. "The guy's been locked in a box for 200 years, and [when] he comes out ... something weird is going to happen."

As for comparisons to his previous films, most notably "Edward Scissorhands," Burton said he can see the link, but confessed that there are many subtle differences between Barnabas Collins and any other character he's put onscreen.

"Edward Scissorhands was more of a naive character. Barnabas has been around the block a few times," Burton told MTV News with a laugh. "There is something about a character who doesn't quite fit into the world, which is similar, just in this case, he's been around a long time."

Burton also gave us up-to-date news on one project many of his biggest fans are very excited for: "Beetlejuice 2." The film is being written by "Shadows" scribe Seth Grahame-Smith, and for Burton, that's as far as things have gotten.

"He's working away on it," the director said of Grahame-Smith, "so I'm just waiting to see what he does."

As for whether we can expect him to make a return to "Batman," the film franchise he started with the original 1989 blockbuster, he was straight to the point, saying, "I think I have enough on my plate."

Check out everything we've got on "Dark Shadows."
